Weekly Book Review 2/19 – 2/25

Title: My Body

Author: Emily Ratajkowski

My Rating: ⭐⭐⭐⭐

Why I gave this rating: If you asked me or many others who Emily Ratajkowski was, I think many of us would say who? Oh, you mean the supermodel who danced naked in that Blurred Lines video. That’s all anyone really knows about her and she’s aware of that. She mentions that right at the beginning. But as I read her book, I read how much more depth she has and how incredibly talented of a writer she is. She opened my eyes to a new way of looking at feminism, society’s norms about beauty, and my body. It’s a fantastic memoir that truly surprised me.

People who like this book: Celebrity Memoirs. Feminists.

Favorite Quote: “I will proclaim all of my mistakes and contradictions, for all the women who cannot do so, for all the women we’ve called muses without learning their names, whose silence we mistook for consent. I stood on their shoulders to get here.”

Title: Sold

Author: Patricia McCormick

My Rating: ⭐⭐⭐

Why I gave this rating: A super, super quick read. I flew threw it in less than an hour. Heavy topics for such a short book though. Kind of poetic reading chapter to chapter.

Title: Lessons in Chemistry

Author: Bonnie Garmus

My Rating: ⭐⭐⭐⭐ (.75)

Why I gave this rating: There are so many things I want to say about this book that I’m struggling to put the words to paper or text in this situation. It’s a romance but also not a romance. Perfect for the romance and the nonromance fans. It’s a change the course of history kind of book. A book that breaks down the barriers previously put into place. A book about women. Women in science. Mothers. And how they can be both and not just one of the other. Going against the norms of society. It’s a book that will sit with me for a while and for others who read it. It’s a 4.75 kind of book. (.25 deducted for making an animal have human traits. A big no for me)

People who would like this book: Readers who like a strong female character. Romance and Nonromance fans. Women in STEM.

Favorite Quote: “Whenever you feel afraid, just remember. Courage is the root of change – and change is what we’re chemically designed to do. So when you wake up tomorrow, make this pledge. No more holding yourself back. No more subscribing to others’ opinions of what you can and cannot achieve. And no more allowing anyone to pigeonhole you into useless categories of sex, race, economic status, and religion. Do not allow your talents to lie dormant, ladies. Design your own future. When you go home today, ask yourself what YOU will change. And then get started.”

Title: One of Us is Lying

Author: Karen M. McManus

My Rating:⭐

Why I gave this rating: This book was annoyingly dumb. Read it all just to see if anything redeemed and it just got worse from start to finish. Half of it was stuff you could’ve foreshadowed from reading the plot. Kind of confused on how it became so popular.

Title: Blood Sugar

Author: Sascha Rothchild

My Rating: ⭐⭐

Why I gave this rating: I was both bored and confused with this book. It kept jumping back and forth in timelines but when it went to the past it was never connected to the previous so half the way you still had unanswered questions from earlier. Was not a very exciting mystery.
