Venezuelan food needs to be more talked about and easier to access in the states. It needs to be on the level of Mexican cuisine. It’s not Mexican cuisine, so do not go in thinking you will get tacos or burritos, as it is its own specific style that is so uniquely, incredible. I will admit, before stopping in Arepa Zone this past weekend, I had only had arepas one other time and still wasn’t really sure what they were or what other foods were part of Venezuelan culture. So if you have any recommendations in terms of what to order or places in Chicago with amazing Venezuelan cuisine, please let me know in the comments.

For those who do not know, arepas are stuffed cornmeal cakes that are crispy on the outside and fluffy on the inside. They can have all different types of fillings but it is usually a meat or veggie as the main base with spices and sauces to elevate the flavor. And these things are packed with flavor. They’re so incredibly filling despite their size. If you are looking for something extra and you like bread and cheese, then you need to check out tequenos. I like to think of them as Venezuela’s twist on mozzarella sticks. And no arepa would be completed without some kind of sauce to top everything off. If you are in the DC area, you need to check these guys out! My overall rating 9/10!
