The Bohemians by Jasmin Darznik

“To take a really good picture you need to learn how to see, not just look”.

The Bohemians

Set in the Jazz Age, San Francisco, Dorothea Lange is just making her debut. She isn’t quite yet the world famous photographer she will soon become. The story follows her early years as she finds her grit, compassion and urning to become who she is meant to be. Where she learned about love, loss, friendship, and destiny before capturing the world famous photograph “Migrant Mother”. How the strength of friendship and the drive for self-invention can break free from history.

“A photograph is only a piece of paper with a silver image burned onto it, but there’s something about some of them — the rare few — that you can’t call anything but an act of live. And you give it — not to only one person; you give it to the world”.

The Bohemians

As many of you know by now, I am a very tough critic when it comes to books. I’m not afraid to end a book if it doesn’t capture my attention in the first 50-100 pages. I rarely give out 5 stars on Goodreads. And it takes a lot from a book for me to favorite this book and recommend to others. This book was a 5 star read and this is me recommending it to all of you. I knew for the majority of the book that it was going to be at least 4 stars for me, but it was the final 50 pages that had me bumping it up to 5 stars. It’s an incredibly beautifully written book that makes you feel like you are walking along the San Francisco streets with Dorothea Lange as she tries to navigate this crazy world. Read this book!
