The Last Thing He Told Me by Laura Dave

I often get asked by family and friends how I find the books that I read. There is no set genre and they’re kind of all over the board in terms of topics. To be honest, I find a good amount of mine by either going to bookstores and seeing what is new or looking at different lists people have created that are must reads. If they thought it was good maybe I will as well. For this specific book it came to my attention due to Book of the Month, a subscription box that sends you a different book each month of your choosing from five different options. Allows you the chance to see what is coming soon or what they believe will be the next big hit in the book world.

The Last Thing He Told Me is a mystery thriller surrounding the life of Hannah, her husband Owen and her stepdaughter Bailey. On the morning that Owen disappears, Hannah receives a note that says Protect Her. Her being her stepdaughter Bailey. With lots of questions surrounding her husband’s disappearance, Hannah takes it into her own hands to try and get some answers that nobody is willing to tell her. She quickly figures out that her husband is not who he has been saying he is and that there are many secrets Owen Michaels has been hiding from not only her but also his daughter. With the help of Bailey, they go on this cross country adventure in search of Owen and the truth. However, the truth might be harder than anything they ever expected to encounter.

There is so much talk about this book at the moment. It’s on many peoples top read lists as well as you will notice it right up front in almost all bookstores you go into. I thought this book was average in many ways. I wouldn’t necessarily call it a mystery thriller, maybe just a mystery style novel. I was waiting for that thriller aspect to draw me in or those cliff hanger chapter endings that has me wanting to keep reading even though I definitely should be going to bed. If you enjoy mystery novels without the thriller component then I would definitely recommend. If you want a little more action then maybe ok to pass on this one. Despite it not being my favorite I am definitely going to be checking out other novels by Laura in the future.

  1. I read this one! The first one of your books I read this summer. I’vebeen reading/listening to a book per week.

By the way, The Mountains Sing is an excellent read. Historical fiction about Vietnam era. Spans a couple generations.

The other one is “Before We Were Yours.”

I would put both of these as a top read. About real stuff, only fiction.
