Weekly Book Review 3/12 – 3/18

Title: Maame

Author: Jessica George

My Rating: ⭐⭐

Why I gave this rating: If you took away how this book was written, it could’ve been an ok book. But the way it was written ruined it for me. It starts the chapter as a typical storyline but then you throw in her Google searches, Google comments, text messages and her inner thoughts and it absolutely lost me. Took away from the plot. Couldn’t focus on what was being said cause I was too busy reading Google comments already written in the book.

Title: I’ll Stop the World

Author: Lauren Thoman & Mindy Kaling

My Rating: ⭐⭐

Why I gave this rating: Read over 100 pages and still could not tell you the plot of this book. There were too many characters and it jumped around to a different person every time. It took away from the actual storyline.

Title: The It Girl

Author: Ruth Ware

My Rating: ⭐⭐⭐

Why I gave this rating: Wasn’t my favorite mystery/thriller set in school. I found this book to be longer than it needed to be. Like easily could’ve cut 50 pages that didn’t need to be there. Took away from the overall plot. The ending was soso as well.

Title: I’m Glad My Mom Died

Author: Jennette McCurdy

My Rating: ⭐⭐⭐⭐

Why I gave this rating: I really struggled with reading this book. In fact, there were so many times I almost put it down and probably wouldn’t have picked it back up. I look at Jennette in pure admiration for sharing her story with the rest of the world. But man was this not an easy book to swallow. I don’t think it’s a book I would necessarily recommend as you need to be in a specific mood to be able to take this on. I need to go read a TJ Klune book stat!

People who would like this book: Celebrity Memoirs.

Favorite Quote: “I take a longer look at the words on her headstone. Brave, kind, loyal, sweet, loving, graceful, strong, thoughtful, funny, genuine, hopeful, playful, insightful, and on and on… Was she, though? Was she any of those things? The words make me angry. I can’t look at them any longer. Why do we romanticize the dead? Why can’t we be honest about them?”

Title: Last Summer on State Street

Author: Toya Wolfe

My Rating: ⭐⭐⭐⭐

Why I gave this rating: As someone who has lived in Chicago for most of my life, I’ve always known there’s a distinct difference between the loop/north side and south side, but didn’t realize some of the different programs that helped divide this line even further. This is a fascinating novel that takes on race, gun violence and gang activity in The Windy City.

People who would like this book: Looking to read an interesting take on race.

Title: The Venice Sketchbook

Author: Rhys Bowen

My Rating: ⭐⭐⭐

Why I gave this rating: This is definitely more for the romantic than for one wanting to read historical fiction. I had hoped the author would dive deep into what it was like in Venice during WWII but it was more of an off-brand Romeo & Juliet. Would recommend her Above the Bay of Angels over this one.
