Weekly Book Review 2/5 – 2/11

Title: Finding Me

Author: Viola Davis

My Rating: ⭐⭐⭐⭐ (.5)

Why I gave this rating: If there was ever a book I wish I had listened to, it would be this one. Pretty spectacular to win a Grammy for an audible narration. This book is the embodiment of treat people with kindness as you never know what they’re going through or what they’ve overcome. Learned a lot about the very talented Viola Davis. A great book to read at any time but especially to read during Black History Month.

People who would like this book: Powerful black authors. Celebrity Memoirs.

Favorite Quote: “Memories are immortal. They’re deathless and precise. They have the power of giving you joy and perspective in hard times. Or, they can strangle you. Define you in a way that’s based more in other people’s tucked-up perceptions than truth.”

Title: The Final Gambit

Author: Jennifer Lynn Barnes

My Rating: ⭐⭐⭐⭐ (.25)

Why I gave this rating: I really enjoyed this series. It’s definitely YA which you notice at some points but other than that it’s very enjoyable. It’s like national treasure on steroids with all the riddles and time put into creating them. It’s a super fast-paced read that I’ve been recommending to a ton of people.

People who would like this book: Fans of complex riddles that all are connected for one major ending.

Title: The Hawthorne Legacy

Author: Jennifer Lynn Barnes

My Rating: ⭐⭐⭐⭐

Why I gave this rating: While I enjoyed this one, the first in the series still takes the cake. Enjoyed the riddles though! If you had unlimited time and didn’t have everyday obstacles in the way, you could easily binge this entire series in one sitting. It’s that fast-paced. I’m a little skeptical though as I begin the final book in this trilogy. Did I read these too quickly together and have gotten tired of this setting? It will be interesting to see what I think of the final book and if I should’ve spaced them out more.

Title: Love and Other Words

Author: Christina Lauren

My Rating: ⭐

Why I gave this rating: This book is just a major eye roll. If you do read it, don’t listen to it as it’s just very frustrating and stupid (great word choice meg). It felt very dumb to me and wasn’t a fan of the writing at all. Not sure if it would’ve been different if I had read the physical book but lasted about halfway before I couldn’t deal with it anymore.

Title: The Last Goodnight

Author: Kat Martin

My Rating: ⭐⭐

Why I gave this rating: Bleh that’s how I felt about this book. As someone who watches many crime shows and enjoys a good mystery, so much of this book just felt unreasonable. Undercover detective goes to talk to victim’s friends and they share all their secrets in the first 5 minutes? Rancher magically having access to high-tech lab work in his house? Didn’t see how it was possible. Read to the ending to see what happened but no big shock when it was announced.

Title: The Awakening (Zodiac Academy)

Author: Caroline Peckman & Susanne Valenti

My Rating: ⭐

Why I gave this rating: Man I hated this book. I finished it to the end just to see if it had any redeeming qualities or had me intrigued enough to consider buying the next one but luckily it didn’t. It’s all just high school drama. You have your jocks, queen Bs, and the loners. Just add in the fact that they’re vampires, werewolves, and other fae creatures. Wasn’t for me.

Title: Hello, Molly!

Author: Molly Shannon

My Rating: ⭐⭐⭐

Why I gave this rating: I went in thinking this would be like other comedian memories that I’ve read. Light-hearted and a quick read. Not exactly. Had a lot of heavy topics I wasn’t ready for. Also on me cause I decided not to read what this book was about before I got it from the library. It’s a good memoir, just not what I was expecting from someone like Molly Shannon.
