Weekly Book Review 1/29 – 2/4

Title: Sometimes I Lie

Author: Alice Feeney

My Rating: ⭐

Why I gave this rating: This is the first Alice Feeney book I really didn’t like. It was lacking in so many ways compared to her others. It didn’t have the chapter-ending cliffhangers I’ve come to love about her writing. For a short book, I lost interest in it very quickly. Wasn’t her best thriller.

Title: Last Night at the Telegraph Club

Author: Malinda Lo

My Rating: ⭐⭐

Why I gave this rating: I read about 100 pages of this book and just couldn’t get into it. Found the characters rather annoying and just didn’t grab my attention the way I was hoping it would.

Title: The Inheritance Games

Author: Jennifer Lynn Barnes

My Rating: ⭐⭐⭐⭐ (.5)

Why I gave this rating: I get the hype. This is a fantastic ya mystery that any reader would enjoy. It had me playing along with the puzzles myself trying to solve the clues. Already ordered the other two in the series. Super fast-paced book. Flew through it in less than 24 hours. Also this series has some of the coolest book covers.

People who would like this book: It’s marked as YA mystery but would recommend for anyone who enjoys a good puzzle or riddle every now and then.

Favorite Quote: “The more complicated a person’s strategy seemed, the less likely an opponent was to look for simple answers. If you could keep someone looking at your knight, you could take them with a pawn. Look past the details. Past the complications.”

Title: A Touch of Darkness

Author: Scarlett St. Clair

My Rating: ⭐⭐⭐ (.5)

Why I gave this book: Spicy spicy spicy!!! Mom and Grandma do not read this book. Anyways, it was a fun romance that is incredibly binge-able. Blew through this in less than 24 hours. A fun take on the mythological story between Hades and Persephone. Don’t think I will continue the series though.

Title: Night Angels

Author: Weina Dai Randel

My Rating: ⭐⭐⭐

Why I gave this rating: It was an interesting story based on an incredible true story. The writing fell just a little flat and the ending was not my favorite. There wasn’t really anything that made it stand out from other historical fiction books that I’ve read.

Title: Woman on Fire

Author: Lisa Barr

My Rating: ⭐⭐⭐⭐

Why I gave this rating: Scandal, Murder, Drama, and Sex meets the Monument Men?? Interesting combo that’s for sure. It’s a very fast-paced book that is filled with action. Not your typical historical fiction. Just seemed a little far-fetched at some points.

People who would like this book: Present day but flashes back to WWII books. People who love all the drama.

Favorite Quote: “Shoes tell the whole story—who you are, what you can afford, if you are an impostor or the real deal.”
