Weekly Book Review 1/16 – 1/21

Title: Beautiful Little Fools

Author: Jillian Cantor

My Rating: ⭐⭐⭐⭐ (.5)

Why I gave this rating: This book was highly addictive and had me from the beginning. It was such a fun drama and a different take on the classic great gatsby. The only reason it’s not a full 5 stars is I felt the ending fell a little flat. So 4.5 for me.

People who would like this book: Fans of The Magnificent Lives of Marjorie Post. Rich people drama. Great Gatsby fans.

Favorite Quote: “And then I’d even start to believe that lie a little myself. I’d fall asleep remembering what it was like to be young and hopeful and free and have our whole entire futures ahead of us again.”

Title: Finlay Donovan Knocks ‘Em Dead

Author: Elle Cosimano

My Rating: ⭐⭐⭐

Why I gave this rating: Once again it’s a very average book. It’s a cozy mystery that has short chapters making it a very quick read. If you are looking for a fun, mindless mystery read then I would recommend this book. Unlike the last one getting me with that final cliffhanger, probably will end the series here.

Title: The Last Queen

Author: Chitra Banerjee Divakaruni

My Rating:⭐⭐⭐ (.5)

Why I gave this rating: I read this one for my family book club and I don’t often read many books set in India, especially India 1800s. While it was an interesting time of history to read, I found myself getting lost trying to keep all the different characters in tack. I also just got to the point in the book I was ready to be over with it. Would consider reading another set in this time frame though.

People who would like this book: Unique historical fiction book readers. Not just another WWII book.

Favorite Quote: “Adoration is a powerful intoxicant.”

Title: Hangry: A Startup Journey

Author: Mike Evans

My Rating:⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

Why I gave this rating: As someone who has worked very closely with companies like Grubhub, it was fascinating to read the behind-the-scenes of how it came to be. But it was more than just talking about its startup. Evans brought you on the journey of his life post-Grubhub and all he saw across the country when he bikes the Trans American bike route (Virginia to Oregon).

People who would like this book: Would recommend it to anyone looking for a business/tech memoir without too much business or tech.

Favorite Quote:”This country is beautiful, and I am lucky to experience it at nine miles per hour, my head toward the horizon, as I ride my lawn chair across it. But that beauty is eclipsed by the warmth of the people in it, who, despite their harried lives and hectic schedules, find time to chat with us, offer pie, or a place to sleep”.

Title: Pretty Girls

Author: Karin Slaughter

My Rating: ⭐⭐

Why I gave this rating: I thought this would be an engaging thriller but it was so descriptively disturbing it gave Stephen King a run for his money. But not in a good way. I made it halfway before I was too grossed out reading this book. Maybe it’s cause I’m one of 3 girls that I found this incredibly upsetting, but I couldn’t finish it. Kept imaging my sisters in this situation.
