Weekly Book Review 1/8 – 1/14

Title: Tomorrow, and Tomorrow, and Tomorrow

Author: Gabrielle Zevin

My Rating: ⭐⭐

Why I gave this rating: I unfortunately went into this book with a biased opinion before I even started. One of my good friends read it last year and just struggled with reading it. We talked about it before I started reading and I think it got stuck in my head. I struggled with building that connection with the characters and didn’t understand the video game references. Made it about 75 pages before I put away. Maybe I’ll go back to it one day.

Title: Finding Dorothy

Author: Elizabeth Letts

My Rating: ⭐⭐⭐⭐

Why I gave this rating: This is a charming book that dives deep into the childhood classic that is The Wonderful Wizard of Oz. It talks about the creation of the book that would go on to create this blockbuster hit. As well as talking about what it was like on set with the talented Judy Garland and the production team behind this film. This is almost all fictional. Just a fun story of what it may have been like. Gave me Saving Mr. Banks vibes while reading (Behind the scenes of Mary Poppins).

People who would like this book: Dreamers. People who like imagining what it might have been like created this classic book and movie.

Favorite Quote: “Magic isn’t things materializing out of nowhere, Magic is when a lot of people all believe in the same thing at the same time, and somehow we all escape ourselves a little bit and we meet up somewhere, and just for a moment, we taste the sublime”.

Title: The Agathas

Author: Kathleen Glasgow & Liz Lawson

My Rating: ⭐⭐

Why I gave this rating: This was very much a YA mystery. It’s a fast read but that’s the one trait I enjoyed. Found the main characters to be quite annoying. If you’re looking for a YA mystery would recommend Finlay Donovan is Killing It. Not surprising based on the title, but it does have a lot of Agatha Christie references as well.

Title: We Measure the Earth with Our Bodies

Author: Tsering Yangzom Lama

My Rating: ⭐⭐⭐

Why I gave this rating: From the cover and description, this book sounds very appealing. However, something I’ve come to realize about myself is that if I have to think too much about a book, I lose interest very easily. I consider myself a decently smart person, but I think I enjoy my books being more straightforward and not super confusing. Luckily, I have an uncle who’s already claimed this book to read after me. I like books that have me Googling afterward, not being stuck trying to follow the plot.

Title: She’s up to No Good

Author: Sara Goodman Confino

My Rating: ⭐⭐⭐

Why I gave this rating: This book was a good book to read after reading some heavier topics lately. A mindless beach read for when you need a very mild book between thrillers and historical fiction. A cute romance story about the importance of family. Wasn’t anything wow about it. Just was something to read to almost cleanse the mind.
