Weekly Book Review 11/27 – 12/3

Title: Take My Hand

Author: Dolen Perkins-Valdez

My Rating: ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

Why I gave this rating: This book was incredible! A fascinating story about the horrible treatment of women minorities in relations to how they should live and use their bodies. It was a historical fiction unlike anything I’ve read before, based on a true case that happened in history. I definitely want to check out other books by her. She’s a very poetic writer.

People who would like this book: Female History.

Favorite Quote: “Our bodies belonged to us. Poor, disabled, it didn’t matter. These were our bodies, and we had the right to “decide what to do with them. It was as if they were just taking our bodies from us, as if we didn’t even belong to ourselves”.

Title: Snow Flower and the Secret Fan

Author: Lisa See

My Rating: ⭐⭐

Why I gave this rating: This is the first Lisa See that I could not finish. Made it half way before I had to put it away. I tried really hard to read it and just couldn’t get into it. I found the plot lacking compared to her others. I know it’s an unpopular opinion based on how many people love it on Goodreads. Would recommend checking out some of her others though.

Title: Half Life

Author: Jillian Cantor

My Rating: ⭐⭐⭐⭐

Why I gave this rating: Imagine a world where Marie Curie did not accomplish all that she did in Chemistry and Physics. Half Life is a story that jumps back and fourth between reality and what the life of Marya Sklodowska would’ve been if she didn’t flee Poland for Paris to study physics. Also, finding the person you are truly meant to be with despite all odds.

People who would like this book: People who like reading about the what ifs of history.

Favorite Quote: “You cannot let circumstances or misfortune or age stop you. You must make a choice to keep going. You always have a choice.”

Title: The House of Kennedy

Author: James Patterson & Cynthia Fagen

My Rating: ⭐⭐⭐(.5)

Why I gave this rating: The Kennedy family is fascinating to me. I love reading about the different members and especially am an intrigued about the so called Kennedy Curse. Patterson and Fagen wrote an engaging nonfiction that talks about JFK, his siblings and parents and what it was like being a Kennedy. The book talks about how the Kennedy family became a house hold name and the different tragedies they all faced.

People who would like this book: People who are obsessed with American Royalty, especially royalty drama.
