Weekly Book Review 11/6 – 11/12

Title: A Good Girl’s Guide to Murder

Author: Holly Jackson

My Rating:⭐⭐⭐ (.5)

Why I gave this rating: Another tiktok book I wanted to check out. This YA mystery is a great read for someone looking to just get into mystery. Felt like Nancy Drew reading this book. Trying to figure out who the murderer was and the behind the scenes clues. I enjoyed this book but not enough to want to read the other two books in the series. It wasn’t the type of style I normally like reading. On to the next tiktok book a random person has recommended for thousands of people.

People who would like this book: Young readers looking for a fun mystery. Ignore young readers. All readers looking for a fun mystery.

Title: A Very Punchable Face

Author: Colin Jost

My Rating:⭐⭐⭐⭐ (.5)

Why I gave this rating: I don’t know the last time I have laughed as hard as I did reading this book. Colin had me cackling within the first 10 pages. I already know this book has been added to the list of books I will read when I a pick-me-up. Colin is so incredibly funny and has written some of my favorite skits on SNL so was really excited to check out his memoir. Probably my favorite comedian memoir I’ve ever read.

People who would like this book: Comedy Memoirs. Wanting to know the insides of SNL.

Favorite Quote: “That’s two lessons I learned very quickly: (1) You don’t need to do anything in life—if it feels wrong or unnatural, it probably is. And (2) I had no one but myself to blame for not trusting my own instincts and pushing back when I felt something was wrong”.

Title: True Biz

Author: Sara Novic

My Rating:⭐⭐⭐

Why I gave this rating: This is a great fall book read, anything set at a school becomes a great fall book in my opinion. My only negative takeaway is that I didn’t think it needed to spand over an entire year. It felt like there were just parts added to make book longer. Could’ve been like 50 pages less if not more. Found myself getting bored easily. But one really cool thing about this book though, is that the premise is a school for the deaf, so the author included history of sign and sign notes throughout the whole book. Learned some sign while reading!

People who would like this book: People wanting to learn about Deaf culture.

Favorite Quote: “She looked down at her palms and understood – her being was implied, her potential thoughts and feelings coursing through her body, the names of everything she knew and those she didn’t yet, all in the perpetual existence in her fingertips.”

Title: Memoirs of a Geisha

Author: Arthur Golden

My Rating:⭐⭐⭐⭐

Why I gave this rating: Another book that everyone should read in their lifetime. Dives deep into the rich Japanese culture, especially how big of a role Geisha’s played in their history. Geisha’s are more than the negative connotation they often have with them. They played a vital role growing Japanese fortune, art scene, and tradition. While this book can be incredibly upsetting at certain parts, without those parts you would lose so many necessary details. A very unforgettable book.

People who would like this book: Asian Historical Fiction fans. A newer classic.

Favorite Quote: “But now I know that our world is no more permanent than a wave rising on the ocean. Whatever our struggles and triumphs, however we may suffer them, all too soon they bleed into a wash, just like watery ink on paper”.
