Books I Want to Read in September 2022

We are entering my favorite time of year! I love Chicago in the fall! We’re getting closer to the holidays and I feel like fall is a great time to spend with loved ones. Fall also means weather is cooling down so it’s perfect time to grab a book and sit by the fire. Here’s just a few of the ones I hope to read this September. What are you looking to read? 1. A Flicker in the Dark by Stacy Willingham

6 teenage girls have gone missing in a small Louisiana town. Chloe Davis’s father has just been arrested as a serial killer and sentenced straight to prison. Chloe and her family are left with trying to understand the truth and move on with their life. However, no secrets ever leave a small town. 20 years later, Chloe Davis is a psychologist up in Baton Rouge and has moved on with her life but still struggles whenever dealing with teenage girls. But girls start going missing again. There’s a copycat killer on the loose, and will Chloe be able to unmask them before it’s too late?

2. I Must Betray You by Rita Sepetys

Set in Romania 1989, Cristian Florescu dreams of being a writer but that isn’t in the cards. Romanians aren’t free to dream. They must follow the strict set of rules set by the communist party. Blackmailed by the secret police, Cristian is sought out as an informer. Does he betray everyone he loves or does he work behind the scenes to undermine one of the most powerful dictators of this time. Cristian risks everything to be a voice for his fellow Romanians but what is the cost for freedom?

3. The Book of Cold Cases by Simone St. James

In 1977, two men are randomly killed by the same gun with notes left behind. But were they random? The main suspect, Beth Greer, is found not guilty and left to return to her mansion in peace. Fast forward 40 years later and true crime websites and podcasts are all the rage. Shea Collins runs a true crime website called The Book of Cold Cases where she investigates past cases never solved. She runs into Beth and asks for an interview. To her surprise, Beth says yes. Shea starts meeting Beth at her mansion but things don’t feel right about this house. Are there other dangers lurking in the darkness?

4. Tomorrow, and Tomorrow, and Tomorrow by Gabrielle Zevin

Sam Masur exits the subway one day when he runs into Sadie Green and a deep friendship emerges. They dive into the world of video game design together and experience all the fame, joy and tragedy that this brings. With climbing the corporate world so fast, there is a fall even greater to come. Spanning between 30 years, the story takes on a roller coaster of life. The very best highs but the detrimental lows. A love story unlike one you have read before.

5. A Girl of the Limberlost by Gene Stratton-Porter

Elnora Comstock finds beauty in nature in this coming of age book set during the early 20th century in the Limberlost Swamp of Indiana. Capturing the beauty of the swamp while the surrounding forests were destroyed for logging and oil purposes. Based on the true stories of the author growing up during this time.

6. West with Giraffes by Lynda Rutledge

Woodrow Wilson Nickel, knows his life is going end soon, after all he has lived a remarkable 105 years. When he learns that giraffes are going extinct, he remembers about the time when two giraffes made headlines and helped win the hearts of many Americans during the Depression era. Two giraffes have just made it across the Atlantic during a hurricane and are set to make their way cross country and become the first pair of giraffes at the newly opened San Diego Zoo. Woodrow, who would be the drivers for this duo, recalls how the kindness of strangers and the heart of animals got him this far in life.

7. The Chancellor: The Remarkable Odyssey of Angela Merkel by Kati Marton

A new book about the truly incredible Angela Merkel and the life she lived. Raised in Soviet controlled Easy Germany, she spent most of her post college days as a research chemist. Not turning to politics till after the Berlin Wall collapse and becoming Chancellor of Germany in less than 15 years. Marton dives deep into learning about her success and what has made Angela stand out from the rest. How Merkel outsmarted so many of her other male politicians while staying true to her own values.

8. The Perfect Marriage by Jeneva Rose

Would you defend your husband if he was accused of killing his mistress? Sarah Morgan’s life is going exactly the way she planned. She just made partner at a top law firm in DC and is reaching all her professional goals she once set for herself. The same can’t be said for her husband. He is a struggling writer and is feeling depressed seeing the type of success Sarah has received over the years. He begins a passionate affair with Kelly Summers. That is until she is found dead at Sarah and Adam’s house and Adam is the only suspect. Sarah finds herself as the defender for her husband and she isn’t sure who to believe anymore. Is he the killer? And if he isn’t, who is?
