The Storyteller: Tales of Life and Music by Dave Grohl

“But with friends, you design your own relationship, which in turn reigns your grief, which can be felt even deeper when they are gone. Those can be roots that are much harder to pull”.

I grew up in a house of music. We weren’t musically talented despite my father trying his hardest. (Didn’t last more than 5 months on the clarinet and all I remember from my 5+ years of piano practice is Heart and Soul). But there was, and still is, always music going on in our house. Cooking dinner, having friends over, and Saturday morning chores are just some of the times when music is playing. Our house could be the spokesperson for Sonos speakers (not sponsored but one could dream). And while I didn’t necessarily grow up with Nirvana or Foo Fighters (we were a U2 and Pearl Jam house) I still was taught the appreciation for all kinds of music which I am forever grateful to my parents for. And while I knew a little of the legendary Dave Grohl, it wasn’t until reading his memoir that I got a better understanding of the rock legend.

“But, beyond any biological information, there is love. Something that defies all science and reason. And that I am most fortunate to have been given. It’s maybe the most defining factor in anyone’s life. Surely an artist’s greatest muse. And there is no love like a mother’s love. It is life’s greatest song. We are all indebted to the women who have given us life. For without them, there would be no music”.

It became very clear to me early on why the title of this book is called The Storyteller, for Grohl has a way of capturing his audience whether it is through a book or a sold-out arena. He makes the book feel so personable plus he makes the same sarcastic comments in () that I often make. Dave is a huge family man. Often talks about how he would not be anywhere in life without his wife and 3 daughters. They’re who keep him playing and keep helping him find his passion for life and music. And while it is often noticed that he is not a novel writer, there was something about his writing and ability to evoke emotion that had me giving this book 5 stars. I’ve only included 3 quotes from this book but I felt like I could’ve highlighted something from every page just from his writing or the stories he shared with the rest of the world. For my fellow readers, if you were to read just one memoir in life I would recommend this one. And for Grohl, thanks for never letting the music die.

“Because every day is still a blank page, waiting to write itself”.
