Above the Bay of Angels by Rhys Bowen

Isabella Waverly is trying to find her place in the house servant world after losing both of her parents. While walking through London on her day off, she witnesses a horrific event, and is the only one to comfort a girl dying on the side walk in her final moments. Before the girl passes she hands Isabella a note. The note is a letter offering employment in the Buckingham Palace as a chef. Deciding it is faith, she heads to Buckingham and becomes Helen Barton. She becomes one of the top growing chefs in the palace and catches the attention of Queen Victoria who invites her to join them in her winter trip to Nice, France. Everything is going great until an unwanted guest arrives, a pass from a royal member could ruin her life and one of the members of the queen’s party was just found dead and she was the last to serve them food. Is her new life about to come crashing down?

I am a sucker for anything British royal family. And I am definitely a sucker for anything British royal family scandal. Something about royals, rich people, and scandal makes it so interesting. This book definitely had royal scandal. Historical fiction is one of my favorite genres but I don’t often read books set during Queen Victorian era. It was interesting reading how different life was, especially for young females at this time. While I did enjoy this book, unless you really enjoy historical fiction, you might not enjoy this book as much. It’s a definite slow burn until the last 50 pages or so. I would be interested in reading more from this time or from this author in the future.
