When I was younger, one of my favorite things to learn about was Greek Mythology. I was enraptured by not only the main Gods/Goddesses but also all the sub characters and children of the Gods. Hercules was, and still is, one of my favorite Disney movies of all time. I was obsessed with the Percy Jackson series and couldn’t get through those books fast enough. In fact, even in college I really wanted to take a course on Greek Mythology but was unable to it fit in my schedule. As the years have gone by, I kind of have forgotten how much Greek Mythology intrigued me. Madeline Miller was able to bring that old love back with Circe. I found myself constantly looking up the characters and how they impacted others. Definitely has me wanting to rewatch Percy Jackson and other Greek Mythology inspired shows.
“Only that: we are here. This is what it means to swim in the tide, to walk the earth and feel it touch your feet. This is what it means to be alive”.
Circe
In the house of Helios, God of the sun, a daughter is born. Circe is not like her other siblings or relatives that are in the house. She is seen as an outsider from the beginning. Discovering she holds the power of witchcraft, she is sentenced to live on a secluded island away from everything she once knew. Her island brings many unexpected guests; Hermes, Athena, Odysseus, and Medea to name a few. She lays her hand on the Minotaur, Scylla and other monsters of the sea. She draws in the wrath of men and other Gods. Finding herself as a pawn in the middle of the battle between the Titans and the Olympians, she must decide for herself if her place belongs with the Gods she knows or the mortals she has grown to love.
“But in a solitary life, there are rare moments when another soul dips near yours, as stars once a year brush the earth. Such a constellation was he to me”.
Circe
