Born a Crime: Stories from a South African Childhood by Trevor Noah

I, like many others, probably only know Trevor Noah from his time on the Daily Show. I never really thought about his upbringing or what life was like for him while growing up in South Africa. Little did I know, there is a lot more to this comedian than what meets the eye. His memoir fills you with joy, fear, anger, laughter and so many other feelings. It leaves you cackling from laughter one page to wanting to cry another. When you read this memoir, you are amazed of everything he went through and would never imagine that the funny guy had such a life changing up-bringing.

“We tell people to follow their dreams, but you can only dream of what you can imagine, and, depending on where you come from, your imagination can be quite limited.”

Born a Crime

A memoir following the life of Trevor Noah from growing up on the streets in South Africa to his journey of eventually hosting The Daily Show. How his birth was seen as a huge controversy in his home country and why he needed to stay inside for the earliest years of his life. What his mother risked to keep him safe and away from the white rule of South Africa. A story of a boy who was never suppose to exist and his mother who would put his life above anything else, including her own safety.

“Love is a creative act. When you love someone you create a new world for them. My mother did that for me, and with the progress I made and the things I learned, I came back and created a new world and a new understanding for her”.
