When this book was first chosen for one of the book clubs I’m in, I was very on the fence about it. I am just not a fantasy reader. I’ve tried and can never get absorbed into the words like I can with other books. Man, did this book change that for me. The House in the Cerulean Sea has me wanting to include more fantasy books in my repertoire and to retry books that I might have shield away from previously (looking at you Harry Potter). It’s another book that gets the highest honor of me wanting to hug it. I’ll go even as far to say that as soon as I finished this book it had me wanting to reread and just bask in the feelings of happiness and joy that it brought upon me. You can’t help but smile while reading this book and it’s the perfect feel good novel.
“Change often starts with the smallest of whispers. Like-minded people building it up to a roar”.
The House in the Cerulean Sea
Linus Baker leads a life in solitary with his cat in his tiny house. He works for the government in the Department in Charge of Magical Youth where he assists with children living in government sanctioned orphanages. When Linus is assigned an interesting case dealing with six magical youth (A gnome, a sprite, a wyvern, an unidentifiable green blob, a were-Pomeranian, and the Antichrist) out on an isolated island, he has to determine whether or not the children are going to destroy the world. When the secrets of the island start emerging it is revealed that not everything is truly as it appears and Linus must decide if it is better to destroy the home or watch the world burn.
“When something is broken, you can put it back together. It may not quite fit the same, or work like it did once before, but that doesn’t mean it’s no longer useful”.

One thing that I took away from this book was how many times I found myself wanting to highlight or write down some of the quotes that were shared. I’ve included a few of my favorite in this post, but it felt like every page there was a quote being said by one of the characters that could easily be applied to today. It’s an incredibly moving book filled with some very powerful quotes. An amazing book that discovers the beauty of the underdog. Of discovering an unusual family in an unlikely place and realizing that: that family is yours. Don’t you wish you were here?
“A home isn’t always the house we live in. It’s also the people we choose to surround ourselves with”.
