After reading now both of Alex Michaelides books, he has quickly become an author that no matter what he writes I will read the books he releases. Not just that but I will run (fast walk or drive) to the nearest bookstore to pick up a hard copy because he is just one of those authors you want to be able to go back and read over and over and then lend out to friends so they can also experience his writing. He does such a great job of the unexpected ending you do not see coming and has you going back multiple chapters to try and understand. His book The Silent Patient is definitely in my top three books that I read in 2021 so when he came out with The Maidens I was stoked to read and it definitely did not disappoint.
Mariana is convinced her neice’s Greek Tragedy professor, Edward Fosca, is a murderer. But everyone at Cambridge University can only see how charming and charismatic he is especially a group on campus known as The Maidens. The Maidens are a group of young female students who are seen almost goddess like amongst fellow students. But when one of the maidens is found killed on campus, Mariana must prove that Fosca is behind it. There is something not right about some of the details behind how she was killed and there is just something off about Fosca. When another body is found, Mariana must help find who the killer is before there is another victim, before she is the victim .
This book is so good! It’s an incredibly fast read like I read it from start to finish on my flight from Seattle to Phoenix (less than 3 hours). I wouldn’t say it’s a very scary book which is definitely ok with me but it has that thriller aspect that has you not able to put the book down. The ending is so incredible that I could not even imagine it coming until it did. I would recommend reading The Silent Patient before hand just for a certain plot aspect but it isn’t major if not. But read Alex Michaelides because he is just such a creative author!!
