The Godmothers by Camille Aubray

When Nicole’s husband gets an offer to work at the White House he advises his wife that they will have to do a full background check on not just the two of them but their entire extended family as well. Not really thinking much about it until her mother tells her she must meet with her godmother before the background check. It is time for the past to finally be revealed. The book jumps back in time to early 1930s when you meet the four godmothers; Lucy, Amie, Filomena, and Petrina. They have married into a wealthy and prosperous Italian family located in the Greenwich Village of NYC. What they don’t know is that the family they just married into are the debt collectors for hundreds of businesses and residents of New York City, including quite a few notorious gangsters. When their husbands are sent away during the war, it is up to the wives to keep the family business running while also making sure the family is protected no matter the cost.

Big Little Lies meets Italian gangsters meets 1930s-1940s New York City. Honestly what more do I need to say. This is a fantastic book if you love drama packed books with surprises in every chapter. Though it is set right around the time of World War II it is very much not your typical historical fiction. Yes there is reference to the war but that is most definitely not the main plot line. Not by a landslide. If you enjoy families with big personalities and add that to insane drama plots then this is a great book for you. As someone who doesn’t always enjoy that much drama in books, I somehow found myself so hooked and engrossed that I could not put it down. I kept having to pause and just think about the insane plot twists I had just read. Put this book on your to read list ASAP!
