Infinite Country by Patricia Engel

If you know me or have been reading my book reviews for some time you probably have caught on that I am a very harsh critic when it comes to books. In all the books I have read this year I have only given four books a five star ranking on Goodreads. This being one of them. For this one though it was not really based on the characters that captured my attention but the plot. I love books that are based on a true story or personal experience and so this immediately caught my eye. I also listened to this one and thought the narrator did a fantastic job of keeping me entertained from start to finish.

Infinite Country is a multi-generational perspective story that illustrates the hard ships of living in a war zone country and just wanting a better life for your family. Elena and Mauro are teenagers when they meet at a market neat Bogota, Colombia. As the years go by and they start their own family, they look to United States to avoid the rising conflicts happening in their home country. They make it to Houston just before their second child is born. Living penny to penny and trying to stay under the radar while sending money back to Elena’s mother in Colombia. When Mauro is deported and sent back to Colombia along with their youngest daughter, Elena and Mauro must work together through the upcoming years on keeping their family close until the day they can hopefully be reunited once again.

This beautiful story talks about what so many families face everyday and truly highlights how there are many things in life I have taken advantage of without ever needing to think about it. How so many of us have this ignorance towards this style of living. And sure we can see/read about it on the news but we will never know the true ramifications for everything that they go through. Many of them are only trying to come to the United States to form a better life then what they might’ve faced back in their home country. Patricia does a great job of going through the highs and lows of this journey as her own life experience is very similar to what she has written about. If you are interested there are a few links below that talk about some great charities and organizations hoping to educate and bring awareness to these immigrants stories.
