Sisters in Arms follows the true story of the first and only all-Black battalion of the Women’s Army Corps and what it was like for them during training as well as overseas during World War II. Grace Steele and Eliza Jones are the two main ladies in this book and they are as different as could be. Grace is an amazing pianist who has dreams of attending Juilliard and Eliza is a reporter for her father’s newspaper company who dreams of getting out of writing the gossip and social posts and being one of the top reporters writing from the battlefield in Europe. When they join the army, they know that this is a baby step compared to what is coming towards them in the next few months. Their job, once they are overseas, is to help deliver letters and packages to service men across Europe from their loved ones back home.
I really enjoyed this book. I loved that it was a historical fiction book that is unlike many others. It shares a story that is rarely talked about. My only complaint is that I wish that there was more story written while over in Europe. I know that the background was needed to help build who each of their characters were and where they came from but I just wish there was a little more story line involving what it was like for them once they arrived overseas. Overall though it is a great book that shares a story that needed to be told about a group of amazing women who often are overlooked in history and a friendship that forms from it.
