For as much as I travel, I am an incredibly nervous flyer. Like I am usually fine when I get on the plane but I am a stress mess waiting in the security line all the way up until the plane finally boards. So I would like to formally apologize for anyone who has had the joy of traveling with me over the years and I thank you for letting me be the spazz that I am. Was reading this book my best idea if I already have some stress when it comes to being on a plane, probably not, but here we are anyways.
Dear Edward is a fictional story that follows the life of twelve year old Edward “Eddie” Adler and how he becomes the sole survivor of a plane crash that kills all other 191 passengers and staff including his family. The story jumps back and fourth between chapters where some have you entering the mindset of some of the different passengers that summer morning before the disaster and what they might have been feeling before the crash happened, and others are after the crash and the years that follow on how Edward learns to live again. What becomes his purpose when all he ever knew is lost.
I really did enjoy this book but have to agree with some critics on that it does feel a little stiff at different points throughout, almost like you are reading a report or a news article about this due to the lack of emotion at certain points. Which doesn’t make sense cause clearly this book should be making you feel lots of emotions with a description like that. So despite the lack of feelings at certain points I still thought it was a great book. I thought it was so clever to jump into the mindset of some of the different characters and discuss who they might have been before they got on that flight and who they became in those final moments. Because what does it mean to truly live.
