The Scent Keeper by Erica Bauermeister

It is truly amazing how we have the ability to associate certain smells with certain memories. How our brain can process what we are smelling and recall a certain time, place, person, etc in just seconds. For example, how whenever I smell someone grilling outside it takes me back to summer nights with my family and my dad at the grill and just enjoying their company. Or how the smell of the ocean just brings an instant sense of calm wash over me. It only takes a second but there is just something so powerful about how much smell can trigger these responses.

The Scent Keeper is a coming of age story following the life of a young girl named Emmeline and her ability to navigate the world through smells that are hidden from the average person. Living on a remote island with her dad, who teaches her about the importance of these smells as well as the ability to create new smells. As Emmeline grows older she becomes curious about the things she has learned over the span of her life and starts to question if those things are actually true or has she been given lies her whole life. When she is tossed into the real world she starts to learn about love, revenge, family, and hate in ways she never expected. But all she yearns to know is who Emmeline truly is.

I very much enjoyed this book. It was different then other coming of age novels that I have read in the past. It kept me intrigued from start to finish and made me pause and think throughout which to me is the sign of a great book. Made me appreciate that smell is a truly amazing thing.

Smell is a potent wizard that transports you across thousands of miles and all the years you have lived.
