Arsenic and Adobo by Mia P. Manansala

If this book has taught me anything it is that I have been sleeping on Filipino food for way too long. Why have I not tried this yet! I will be looking for the best Filipino food in Seattle these next few weeks to see if the description in this book is as delicious as it sounds. Though while the food sounded delicious, I don’t think I will be giving this book the same kind of recommendation.

It follows the journey of Lila Macapagal as she tries to clear her family and her name when they are accused of killing the town food critic who happens to be her ex boyfriend. She has just moved back home from Chicago after a failed relationship and is working at her Tita Rose’s restaurant until she can figure out what she wants in life when this disaster occurs. When she becomes the main suspect, she takes it upon herself to find the true killer and ends up learning a lot more secrets she never knew about this little town and the people who call it home. But she better hurry, as the real killer is still on the loose.

Arsenic and Adobo is a comedy action style book I would say. If someone were to only just tell me that I would say sign me up. Comedy action is by far my favorite movie genre so if I get to read that style, even better. Unfortunately, I found this book lacking in both aspects at different points throughout. Action was pretty good at certain parts but it wasn’t a very funny book as it so claims to be. Just kind of a monotone level the entire time. I would not recommend this book unless you are looking for delicious sounding Filipino food descriptions. But at that point just go out and try some food on your own. You may be pleasantly surprised like myself.
