American Assassin by Vince Flynn

I don’t know what it is but I am now 2/2 on picking absolute monster size books. It’s probably cause I don’t look at page count when I pick the books I read but what can ya do, we all have flaws. So once I got over the fact that I had another almost 500 page book to conquer I was ready to move on and start reading. I also know this book came out in 2010 so I’m a little late to the game of Vince Flynn.

I’ve read a lot of genres in my day, mostly fiction of some sort but have been known to dabble in non-fiction, biographies, etc. From what I can recall this was the first time I had read a really heavy action packed book. Like Mission Impossible, The Bourne Legacy style action packed. This was pretty much what I was imagining the entire time while reading this book.

American Assassin follows the journey of a young American male on his fight for retribution after the Pan Am Flight 103 in 1988, killed his high school sweetheart and 269 others when it was destroyed by a bomb and became the deadliest terrorist attack in the history of the United Kingdom. Mitch Rapp has just graduated top of his class from Syracuse University and was one of the top lacrosse players across the country. He gets recruited for a secret department within the CIA whose main mission is to get rid of terrorists or those who work with terrorists in any way. Trying to stop them before they come to American soil. With tensions high in Beirut, Lebanon, Lebanese terrorists working with Russians, and a boss who is boarder line crazy, he has his work cut out for him.

Unfortunately, I was not as into this book that I had hoped for. I felt like I was missing something while reading this book. It didn’t pull me in enough. Yeah, there’s lots of action aspects but I was missing something to help capture me into wanting to keep reading. I know this is a series but I just wasn’t impressed enough to want to pick up the second book and continuing to follow the life of Mitch Rapp. I’m not going to stereotype all action fiction novels into this category as I just haven’t gotten the chance to read them yet, so I look forward to reading and being transported into the world of Jason Bourne and Jack Reacher in the future.
